Copyediting Sample

June 6, 2010

Here is a sample from a proposal I copyedited for a friend.  It is an excerpt taken from a longer piece, which I edited in its entirety.  The author’s objective was to convince the campus dining services at Western Washington University to offer healthier ways for non-coffee-drinking students to get caffeine.

Technical Translation

June 5, 2010

For an English class at Western Washington University, I was assigned to take a technical document written for a specific field and translate it into laymen’s terms.  I chose to take an excerpt from an advanced psychology textbook, on the subject of eating disorders, and translate it for young teenage girls.  My final product took the form of a two-sided flier, which could be distributed in schools, hospitals, or community centers.

Brochure for Compass 2 Campus Program

June 5, 2010

For English 462 at Western Washington University (WWU), I was involved in a service learning project with two other students.  We created this brochure for Compass 2 Campus, a peer mentoring program founded at WWU.  The brochure’s primary aim is to convey the pilot program’s accomplishments to stakeholders such as the state legislature, but it will also be widely distributed to people curious about the program.

Because of my group’s diverse skill set, I handled a lot of the writing and editing for the brochure.  We all helped with everything, but my specialty lies in the realm of language, so I was happy to take on the word-related tasks.

Details about Compass 2 Campus can be found in the brochure, which is linked below.  A note: because the brochure is laid out for printing, the pages do not appear in numerical order.  Page numbers are marked.

Research Report: English Majors as Editors

June 4, 2010

This is an individual project I did for an English class.  I compiled a list of skills that most English majors possess and put them side by side with a list of skills desired in editors (drawn, at least largely, from job listings).  My primary aim was to show fellow English majors that we do have options beyond teaching or self-publishing.  Though I wrote the piece for class, in doing so I also learned a lot about my own future possibilities.
